Fetty Wap isn’t your average rapper. Unapologetically true to himself, the Paterson, N.J. native rolls with the same crew he’s had for years — and when he works, he doesn’t just work for himself but for his whole crew. Refusing to bend for the music business, Wap surrounds himself with friends and family and does whatever he wants, when he wants, whether that entails learning how to trade stocks or dropping $80K on a new set of teeth.
In October 2015, Wap’s self-titled freshman studio album debuted at the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart and, even years later, its best-selling single, « Trap Queen, » hasn’t slowed down. In fact, the sizzling hot track was certified 7x Platinum nearly three years later in March 2018.
Wap hasn’t been immune to scandal, however, and between endless baby mama drama, a leaked sex tape, and appearances in court, the young rapper’s already lived a hundred lives before his 30th birthday (He was born in 1991). This is the untold truth of Fetty Wap.
From the church band temporary homelessness
Growing up, Fetty Wap attended Paterson Public School No. 6, which he described to Trevor Noah in a 2016 chat with Interview mag as « the worst school in the city. » Fortunately, he had a weekly respite from that environment. According to The Guardian, as a young man, Wap was a regular church attendee, where he honed his music skills by drumming in the family band. Wap’s mother (above) sang in the choir, while his dad was on keyboards, his brother played bass, and his uncle had control of the main drums. In fact, it was actually said uncle who forced a young Wap to practice and perfect his drumming.
However, somewhere along the line, things changed. Unsure what to do with his future — « As I got older (16, 17) I was like, ‘I want to do my own thing.’ I wasn’t seeing eye to eye with my parents. » — Wap eventually dropped out of high school and started dealing drugs. With no place to stay, he slept wherever his friends would let him, which usually entailed a cold, hard floor. « I didn’t even get to use no bed, » he told the outlet. « I was lucky to have a carpet. »
Did he almost loose both of his eyes?
Take a look at Fetty Wap and one of the first things you’ll notice is the space where his left eye should be. There has been a lot of talk about it over the years — yep, even an Illuminati conspiracy — but even so, many don’t know much about its true cause: congenital glaucoma.
According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, the rare disease « may be inherited, caused by incorrect development of the eye’s drainage system before birth, » which results in « increased intraocular pressure, which in turn damages the optic nerve. » Although, as Wap explained it to VIP Saturdays in February 2015, he thought the condition was the result of « an accident » he got into when he « was little » that affected both of his eyes. « The doctor saved one … so I was blessed to have my vision, » he said.
However, a few months later, his mom set the record straight to TMZ, explaining that he « was born with glaucoma » and that he « lost the eye at six months. » The removal surgery resulted in Wap wearing a prosthetic eye in his early years. But according to Wap, after getting « reconstructive surgery when [he] was 12, » he eventually got rid of it « because [he] didn’t want to look like everybody else.
He found his biggest beat randomly online
When Fetty Wap released « Trap Queen » in 2014, he did so online and, initially, not many people took notice. The hype built slowly from there and, come mid-2015, the track entered the Billboard Hot 100 charts and peaked at the No. 2 spot in May. But its success didn’t end there. In 2018, the song did something astonishing: Four years after its initial release, it was certified 7x platinum in the United States. That number is equal to seven million units being sold with each unit being calculated as « one paid song download or 150 streams, » according to Headline Planet. Impressive.
In addition to its success, another « Trap Queen » surprise comes in the form of the source of its beat: an unknown Belarusian producer. According to The Guardian, Tony Fadd posted the beat on his website, which is where the aspiring rapper and his crew accidentally found it. They then tasked New Jersey producer Brian « Peoples » Garcia with polishing it and, in December 2013, the first version of « Trap Queen » was born. Rather than taking full credit, Wap did the right thing and reached a royalty-sharing agreement with Fadd.
What’s in a name?
Fetty Wap may sound like two arbitrary words simply placed together to create a memorable stage name, but the moniker actually has some very specific inspiration. « ‘Fetty’ is money, » he told GlobalGrindTV in 2015. « Wap is from [fellow rapper] Gucci Mane [nickname] Guwop. » Wap told the outlet that his real name is Willie Zoovier, and that he was named after his grandfather, who was a pastor, but he chose to change it out of respect. « My grandfather lived a certain way, and I got too much respect for my grandfather to live how I’m living now, » he explained.
Wap elaborated on the metaphorical meaning of his handle while speaking with Interview, which actually reported his real name as Willie Maxwell II. « Fetty Wap is that person that holds it together, and the only way you can hold it together is by having family around you. So Fetty Wap is just a face. [He is] just a name and face. They hear a song, and they see a name. Then they see a face behind the song, but they don’t know the person. That’s why I’ve got alter egos, like Zoovier. »
His teeth cost a massive fortune
When Fetty Wap smiles, he smiles with money. In 2016, TMZ broke the story that Wap actually dropped $80K on brand new teeth after paying a visit to Dr. Mojgan Fajiram at her Sutton Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry clinic in New York City. Requesting « the straightest, whitest looking teeth possible, » he ended up with porcelain veneers on each tooth on both the top and bottom. All in all, Wap had 20 teeth done and with each one costing a whopping $4,000, dropping a cool $80,000 when all was said and done. Wowza.
As for Dr. Fajiram, she calls herself « NYC’s top cosmetic dentist » and it seems she’s become the go-to for many a rapper and celebrity. In fact, she has racked up an impressive A-list clientele over the years, including Swizz Beatz, Idris Elba, Fat Joe, and DJ Khaled, all of whom have made regular appearances on her Instagram.
His squad is named after ‘the finest liquor’
When Fetty Wap talks about his New Jersey squad, he talks about his Remy Boyz, and there’s a very specific reason why he calls them that. The crew takes its name from Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Cognac because « 1738 is the finest liquor in the urban district, » Wap explained to Vlad TV in 2015. « If you go to the liquor store and you get a bottle of 1738, it’s going to be the most expensive Remy, » he elaborated. « And that’s what we planned out to be. … We the finest. We taste the best and everything. »
As Rémy Martin’s official site reveals, the spirit is « aged in toasted oak barrels [and] is the embodiment of traditional craftsmanship. » Its taste comes with the « mellowness of butterscotch and baked spices with hints of dark chocolate » and as for its price, a bottle will set you back around 60 bucks. Yup, sixty.
He was involved in a sex tape scandal
Illicit celebrity tapes may be nothing new, but the circumstances surrounding the release of Fetty Wap and ex-girlfriend Alexis Skyy’s down-low download were anything but normal. As TMZ discovered in January 2017, the Love & Hip Hop reality star hit her former flame with an official cease and desist order, claiming that she had nothing to do with the leak and that he was likely responsible for it. According to the paperwork filed by her lawyer, the naughty video was « released by someone gaining access to the materials through him, with or without his knowledge. »
To underline her point, Skyy tweeted a photo of an inspirational quote that read « No weapon formed against me shall prosper, » with the caption, « All of this is so crazy and embarrassing!! To think SOMEBODY would want to expose my personal life with the world is so disgusting. » She concluded, « But I have faith in God’s work and I know I’m covered! Sorry to my family and supporters for this. »
He has as many as seven kids with six women
Fetty Wap takes the term ladies’ man to a whole new level. In January 2018, In Touch investigated the number of alleged baby mamas Wap has and they discovered — wait for it — six! As such, the fertile father figure allegedly shells out $100,000 in child support each month.
First there’s Wap’s childhood girlfriend, Ariel Reese, who allegedly inspired the smash hit « Trap Queen ». The pair have a son together, Aydin Zoovier Jr. (born in 2011), and have been in each other’s lives for over a decade, according to VH1. There’s also Wap’s Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood co-star Masika Kalysha, who welcomed daughter Khari Barbie Maxwell in 2016, as well as fellow Love & Hip Hop star Alexis Skyy who gave birth to daughter Alaiya Grace in January 2018. Meanwhile, Lezhae Zeona had daughter Zaviera in 2016 and, in March 2018, had another child with Wap, a baby boy named Zy, who was born just two months after Skyy gave birth.
And that’s not it. Us Weekly reported that Wap has two more daughters, Amani and Lauren, although it’s unclear who their mothers are. That makes a grand total of seven little ones for Wap, as of this writing, who allegedly couldn’t be more proud. According to the Daily Mail, he once boasted on social media ahead of Zy’s birth, « It’ll be 7 at 27 with 22 million. »
Two of his baby mamas have violent beef
It ain’t easy being Fetty Wap. Or, more specifically, it ain’t easy juggling so many baby mamas, especially when they don’t get along. In January 2019, Lezhae Lowder (above left) was arrested for « disorderly conduct/improper behavior » after she was accused of pulling a knife during a fight with fellow baby mama Alexis Skyy (above right), according to TMZ.
The fight between Wap’s two exes took place in the parking lot of a White Castle in Paterson, N.J. after the women already had an encounter at a local bar. Lowder was working at the bar, and reportedly tried to attack Skyy when she came in as a customer. Skyy allegedly went home after that, but her friends went to White Castle, where Lowder also showed up. Thinking Skyy was still with the group, Lowder reportedly pulled up at the fast food joint and started throwing bottles at them. She then allegedly pulled a knife and that’s when a full-blown fight broke out. The authorities were called and Lowder ended up in handcuffs.
According to Lowder, however, Skyy was present for the burger joint brawl, and she pulled the knife to protect herself. Lowder also claims that « male » members of Skyy’s crew hit her, and that she wasn’t arrested for the fight, but rather, for « continuing to yell and threaten the opposing crew when cops eventually showed. » Oy, the drama!
He accused a baby mama of tricking him
Fetty Wap just can’t seem to stay away from baby mama drama! In January 2016, Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Masika Kalysha came forward to claim she was pregnant with his child and the then-24-year-old rapper wasn’t having any of it. At least not at first.
Wap started by completely denying that he was the father, then he told The Shade Room that Kalysha tricked him into getting pregnant. « She knew what she was doing, » he told the outlet, adding, « I wasn’t just no random dude in the club. … She knew I was going to be there and that’s how that happened. » He then flat out admitted to having « unprotected sex » with Kalysha, but that she also « went around [some s**t that was supposed to happen], » which his how he « knew it was all planned out. » Wap then referenced rumors he’d been hearing about her and « football players and basketball players, » prompting this contradictory statement: « Congratulations to her and whoever is [the father]. » Sounds messy!
Given the dramz, Wap’s fans were shocked when, in March 2016, the rapper decided to rush to Los Angeles from New Jersey as soon as he found out that Kalysha had gone into labor. He even dropped at hint to fans that he was in town for the big moment, tweeting, « Something bout this California air. »
Daughter Alaiya had a terrifying health scare
Shortly after celebrating her first birthday in January 2019, Fetty Wap’s daughter with Love & Hip Hop star Alexis Skyy, Alaiya Grace, suffered a terrifying health scare. Alaiya, who was born three months premature in January 2018, and reportedly suffers from hydrocephalus, a « chronic, neurological condition caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), resulting in pressure on the brain, » according to the Hydrocephalus Association.
As In Touch Weekly reported, the little girl had to undergo emergency surgery to repair a malfunctioning implant in her brain, which is meant to drain the fluids. Thankfully, everything went well. Skyy Instagrammed from the hospital (via People), asking her followers to send « prayers please for my baby » before confirming that the « surgery went well, thank you GOD. » She added, « Thank you everyone for your prayers, Lay Lay is good » before sharing a snap of her little one laughing (above), which she captioned, « Princess. We going home GOD is so good. »
He loves the stock market
When Trevor Noah interviewed Fetty Wap in 2016, he asked if the young rapper would ever consider jumping into the business side of music by becoming a producer or manager. The answer was not what anyone could have expected: « I don’t like all this business stuff, man. I like stocks. … I’m big into stocks. I’ve invested in a lot of stocks. » Yes, stocks.
The surprising passion began following a conversation with his accountant. « He was like, ‘Yo, what if I could turn a million dollars into $20 million?' » Wap remembered. « The next day he was at my house, my leg was broken, we were on the computer, looking at it, like, ‘I don’t understand none of this stuff.’ And he breakin’ it down, like, ‘Yo, this is trade values, this is stock minutes, this is going to go up, this is going to drop down. You’ve got to know when to sell, when to trade, when to buy.’ And I was catching on… And now that’s what I do in my free time, » he boasted.
He plead guilty to drunk drag racing
In March 2018, Fetty Wap « admitted to drag raced while drunk on a Brooklyn highway » and was ordered by a judge to pay a small fine and attend several safe driving programs, the New York Daily News confirmed. Wap was behind the wheel of a 2012 Mercedes Benz and speeding « at least 105 mph in a 55 mph zone » on the Gowanus Expressway in November 2017.
According to the outlet, he was charged with « reckless endangerment, illegal speed contest, drunken driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a car and illegal lane changing. » He eventually pleaded guilty to to reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated. Had Wap taken the case to trial, he could have faced « up to four years behind bars. » Instead, he was ordered « to attend a two-day driver improvement program and 14 hours of an impaired driving program. » He also had to « attend a victim impact panel » and fork over « $500 in fines. »
It’s good to be friends with Fetty
The rap world is full of artists who take themselves too seriously, but Fetty Wap credits his personal success with being the polar opposite of the norm. As he told Interview in 2016, he thinks people are able to relate to his music and support him « because I don’t care about being Fetty Wap. » He continued, « Like, this doesn’t mean anything to me. My plan was to make sure that my son would be good, and I have a daughter now, so now she’s included into the equation, and the work I do as Fetty Wap made me care, » he elaborated.
For Wap, it’s all about helping enrich those around him — so much so that he’s not just working for himself, but also to help his parents, siblings, and closest friends. « We got about 17 members in the squad, seven apartments, and 12 cars that you got to pay for, » he revealed. « And those aren’t even my cars. »
But these aren’t clingers. Wap also told the mag that « at some point, [he] asked them for something, » and he’s simply being loyal now that he’s made it. To that end, Wap still rolls with his original Paterson, N.J. crew. As his best friend Monty pointed out to Rolling Stone in 2015, « Most everybody come from the hood … everybody was there from the beginning. We part of the zoo. »
