Country music’s Brittany Kerr and Jason Aldean shocked many fans when, in September 2012, they were photographed allegedly canoodling at a bar in Los Angeles, Calif. The sighting was a bit scandalous because Aldean was married to his high school sweetheart, Jessica Ussery, at the time. Aldean and Kerr, a former professional cheerleader, would go on to marry in March 2015, and, in between the couple’s initial meeting at a bar and their trip down the aisle, there has been a lot of speculation regarding Kerr’s background.
For starters, some people still have questions about the night they were caught getting cozy in 2012. Did Kerr know Aldean was taken at the time? And has she apologized for those steamy pics of their encounter? We’ll spill the beans on these burning questions and more in just a second.
As for Kerr’s life before she became Aldean’s leading lady, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover. Not only did the North Carolina native try her hand at fame before meeting the « You Make It Easy » performer (hint: It involves a popular reality competition series), but there are some surprising details about her personality that you probably didn’t see coming.
Are you ready for the juicy scoop? Pull up a seat and let’s unpack the untold truth of Brittany Kerr.
What really happened that night?
Jason Aldean and Brittany Kerr first crossed paths one fateful night in September 2012 at the Los Angeles bar The Den, when the singer was still married to Jessica Ussery. Unbeknownst to the now-couple, someone at the bar snapped photos of them embracing and allegedly kissing, snaps which later appeared on gossip website TMZ. Oops.
After the pics went public, Aldean apologized to his fans in a straightforward Facebook post. « The truth is that I screwed up. I had too much to drink, let the party get out of hand and acted inappropriately at a bar, » he wrote, in part. « I left alone … that’s the end of the story. I ultimately ended up embarrassing my family and myself. »
Although Aldean seemingly copped to his role in the scandal, Kerr gave some conflicting accounts regarding what really happened that evening. Arguably the most intriguing inconsistency centers around whether Kerr knew the singer was married, a detail she supposedly told friends she was unaware of. But TMZ later confirmed via video footage that Aldean did have his wedding ring on when he first met Kerr.
Hmm, maybe the ex-dancer didn’t notice the band thanks to the venue’s dim lighting? Interesting.
The truth about her remorse
Given the less than ideal circumstances surrounding Brittany Kerr and Jason Aldean’s initial meeting, some fans were quick to throw around the word homewrecker. The ex-cheerleader had to shut down her personal Twitter account due to the backlash, and she was still fielding hateful comments on other platforms as recently as July 2018. But the truth is Kerr has expressed remorse for her actions, and she did cop to having a « lapse in judgement » that night.
« The actions I portrayed recently were not a representation of my true character, but a lapse in judgment on my part, » she told TMZ in October 2012. « I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone that has been affected by this, including my friends and family. »
But, wait. What about those rumors that Kerr told her friends she didn’t know Aldean was married? Doesn’t this statement make it pretty clear that she was aware of her wrongdoing from the jump? Regardless, hopefully the naysayers will accept her apology one day — everyone makes mistakes and sometimes the only thing you can do to make it better is to move forward.
Did Kerr’s mom lie for her benefit?
Brittany Kerr comes from a protective family that doesn’t stand by when she’s under attack. Case in point: Kerr’s mom, Debbie Kerr, came to her daughter’s defense after some fans blamed her for Jason Aldean and Jessica Ussery’s divorce. « Brittany is not responsible for any breakup, » Debbie told Radar Online in April 2013, just days after Jason filed papers to divorce Jessica. « As her mom I would know. She doesn’t even live in L.A. anymore, she lives right here in town. Brittany is single right now, but she was never with that married man. »
What’s strange about Debbie’s claim? Brittany was spotted backstage at one of Jason’s concerts in March 2014, less than a year after the divorce went public. Additionally, the couple got engaged in September 2014, one year and four months after the singer’s split from his ex-wife. It’s all very interesting timing, to say the least.
On other hand, however, it’s possible that Jessica and Jason’s marriage was finito long before they pulled the trigger on the divorce. In that case, Jason and Brittany may have been in the clear to date and enjoy one another’s company without judgement, right? And as the saying goes, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
Burned by J.Lo
Once upon a time, Brittany Kerr was just another contestant vying for fame on American Idol. Although Jason Aldean’s now-wife didn’t advance far in season 11, she was one of the 301 contestants who made it to Hollywood in 2012, according to Taste of Country. As for how Kerr’s audition went down? She managed to impress judges Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson with her rendition of Joss Stone’s « Spoiled, » but pop star Jennifer Lopez wasn’t sold on her talent. Not only did the Lopez vote against Kerr’s trip to Tinseltown, but she didn’t have much faith in her singing voice. « I’m going to say no this time. I’m sorry, sweetie, » the « On The Floor » performer told Kerr. « I thought she had a pretty voice, it just wasn’t strong enough. She’s not going to survive a week. »
Unfortunately for Kerr, she was sent home during the first week, and she never got to perform in front of a live audience. Ouch.
How Aldean’s kids really feel about Kerr
Divorce can be tricky, especially where it involves young children. At the time of Jason Aldean and Jessica Ussery’s split, the couple’s two kids — Kendyl and Keeley — were both under 12, which is why it was reportedly difficult for them to accept Brittany Kerr at first. « Jason is working Brittany into Kendyl and Keeley’s lives, yet they see her as the other woman, » a supposed source told Us Weekly. « It’s hard. They’re important to him. »
The situation was equally as hard for Ussery, with an insider telling the outlet: « It’s tough for Jessica when they have to spend time with Brittany. »
The good news? Kerr is incredibly close with Aldean’s kiddos as of March 2019. The girls often appear on Kerr’s social media accounts, and the stepmom pens tributes to them frequently. « Hard to believe Keeley is 16 Where has the time gone?! » Kerr wrote in honor of Keeley’s sweet sixteen on Feb. 17, 2019. « Love you, sweet girl. » Aww.
Her real role in Aldean’s blackface scandal
Jason Aldean found himself at the center of a major scandal in November 2015 after photos of the singer in blackface surfaced online. The country star donned the inappropriate look for Halloween 2015, when he dressed up as rapper Lil’ Wayne, according to TMZ. Many people were upset about the costume, with one person tweeting: « @JasonAldean wore blackface on Halloween. He is trashy and ignorant. He doesn’t represent my Nashville. »
Instead of copping to the mistake and apologizing, Aldean defended his actions while throwing Brittany Kerr under the bus in the process. « In this day and age people are so sensitive that no matter what you do, somebody is going to make a big deal out of it, » he explained to Billboard in September 2016. « Me doing that had zero malicious intent … I get that race is a touchy subject, but not everybody is that way. Media tends to make a big deal out of things. If that was disrespectful to anyone, I by all means apologize. That was never my intention. It never crossed my mind. »
The article also noted that Kerr, a makeup artist, « painted » Aldean’s face so he could go « unrecognized in public. » We’re not sure why the singer felt compelled to convey this detail to the author, especially when it seemingly implies Kerr was at fault for the scandal. Strange.
Is Kerr all about fame?
If you assumed Brittany Kerr was a homebody before her American Idol audition, think again. Kerr was a professional cheerleader for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets) dance team, the Lady Cats, from 2011-2012. The role required the dancer to perform in front of thousands while wearing short shorts and a crop top, which means Kerr is probably not low on confidence. A bikini-clad Kerr also graced the cover of the 2011-12 calendar for the Lady Cats, an honor that garnered her local attention, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Taking Kerr’s modeling aspirations a bit further, she applied for Victoria’s Secret Model Search contest in 2011. « Modeling is my secret passion. In 2010, I entered a Victoria’s Secret Model Search contest and I placed in the top 80! » she wrote on her now defunct website (via E! News). Hmm, it sounds like Kerr’s secret passion isn’t so secret.
But most interesting of all, Kerr was supposedly a production assistant on the television movie, Against The Wild. Although her supposed involvement was seemingly small, it’s pretty clear she tried to break into Hollywood before meeting Jason Aldean.
Despite Kerr’s interest in fame, however, she hasn’t always felt comfortable in the spotlight. « When I’m on stage, it’s just me. The spotlight’s on me. It’s such a sense of vulnerability, because you are leaving everybody with the ability to criticize you alone, » she explained to the Charlotte Observer.
She’s actually a tomboy at heart
On the surface, Kerr might seem like a very feminine and beauty-obsessed kind of person. But underneath the makeup and carefully curated outfits, the mom-of-two is a big tomboy at heart. Surprising, right?
« She was always a tomboy, » Kerr’s mom, Debbie, told the Charlotte Observer. « So when she asked for voice lessons, we didn’t give them to her. We just thought she was better at sports so (kept telling her), ‘Don’t worry about it.' »
The article also mentioned how Kerr was involved in « basketball, softball, and taekwondo (black belt) » during her childhood. Dang, we need to make a mental note never to tangle with Kerr — it sounds like she could easily kick our butt.
Going off of her love for sports, Kerr enrolled in the University of Alabama to participate in the college’s strong sports culture. « Growing up, I gained this love for football that was just unreal, » she told the outlet. « I ended up visiting Alabama and completely fell in love with it. Everybody was completely gung-ho Crimson Tide, and I just wanted to be a part of it. »
As the old adage goes, « looks can be deceiving. »
She’s really close with her family
Judging by Kerr’s Instagram account, it’s easy to see why some fans might think she’s preoccupied with her glamorous lifestyle. But underneath it all, the mom is a family girl at heart who makes it a point to spend quality time with her younger brother, Hunter, and older sister, Kamden.
The ex-cheerleader is especially close to Hunter, who she gave high praise to in an interview with the Charlotte Observer, revealing: « He’s actually the best friend that I think I’ve ever had. » Ker also admitted that, in her junior year, she transferred from the University of Alabama to UNC Charlotte to be closer to Hunter. How sweet.
It’s possible Kerr’s closeness with her siblings has something to due with their similar birthdays. « All three of us had the same due date, different years, » Kerr revealed on Instagram in June 2016. « Happy (belated) Birthday to my bro and sis!! A house full of Gemini’s…. Bless our parents. »
Wait, what about murder?
Considering Brittany Kerr is married to a country guy who loves to hunt, you’d think she’d share his interests. The truth? Kerr is a big animal lover who can’t stand the thought of her hubby killing deer and wild turkeys for sport. The former dancer even joked that she « needs therapy » to deal with her animal obsession, a sentiment Jason Aldean agreed with wholeheartedly in a Q&A video the couple made in June 2016. The singer seemingly expressed mild frustration when discussing how they dealt with their differences, stating in the Instagram video: « We just came to an agreement — I just don’t hunt at my house. I try not to show up at home with any dead things in the back of the truck. » Seems fair to us.
But wait — that’s not the only contradictory detail about Kerr. Despite her upbeat and sunny demeanor, the North Carolina native has a thing for « murder » shows. When discussing her favorite TV shows in the vid, Kerr listed CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery and NBC’s Dateline as examples. Go figure.
